Watch this clip from Six Degrees of Separation, in which Will Smith's character discusses Salinger's Catcher in the Rye.
After, reflect on what was said. What has this book seemingly prompted? What are its themes?
Now, begin to read the novel...look out for the moments mentioned. How can you explain Holden's neuroses?
You should have read these pages of The Catcher in the Rye by the end of this week.
Then upload 500 words by Friday answering the following:
How does Salinger craft a believable voice for Holden?
Why is Catcher still popular? Read this article. Why do you think it still has resonance today? Would you challenge the article's premise that it does?
Now, either explore the works of art, music or film inspired by the novel which are mentioned in the article - or explore the references to mass murders supposedly influenced by Catcher made in Six Degrees of Separation.
Has the book, in your opinion, been a positive force in the world?
